Motorguide started in 1961 by G.H.Harris in Jackson Mississippi. Jackson was determined to make an electric trolling motor that was user friendly. Tinkering with a Field wound electric motor he developed a system that used a spring loaded direction control that he could operate with his foot to steer his boat and fish with both hands. Soon after his invention caught the attention of Herschede Hall Clock Company in Starkville and they struck a deal with Harris to build and sell this new design and called it Guide-Rite. Then shortly after they came out with rack and pinion steering in the mid 60's. The thrust at that time was 10 lbs. At that time they changed the name to look more technical and called it MotorGuide.

In 1967 an enforcement officer named Sloan was in a fishing tournament and he moved his troll motor to the front of his boat and the modern day bass boat was born. Sloan pointed out that it is easier to pull and chain than to push.

In the early 70's Pete Hornton designed a bracket that would allow you to store your troll motor horizontally on your deck when not in use. In 1975 a major event took place,Motor Guide pioneered the first 12/24 volt troll motor. In the late 1970's MotorGuide designed the first rubber mounting system to protect the fibreglass decks on the more expensive bass boats. By the end of the 1970's Motor Guides reputation was established in the fishing world. Inn 1984 the Brunswick Corporation purchased the Motor Guide brand and added it to their Zebco fishing operation.

In 1993 Motor Guide purchased swivel eze a Texas based Accessory company that sells seat bases and swivels. In 1999 Motor Guide purchased Pinpoint troll motors and sonars. Then in 2002 MotorGuide designed the first Digital Guardian Module.

In 2005MotorGuide introduced it's first wireless series trolling motor with a built-in reciever. Todayy MotorGuide is still built at the company's ISO 9001:2001 certified plant in Tulsa with American Pride.
